Airplay Monitor was created by its parent,
Billboard Magazine, in 1993 to provide a view of radio's
airplay of songs. It covered four formats (rock,
Top 40, Country and R&B) and the derivatives of
each. The magazine had both
a multi-format edition and also issued format
specific versions.
In October of 2004, it became "Radio Monitor" and
ended publication in 2006.

In the words of editor Sean Ross on the occasion of
the publication's
5th anniversary:
"From the beginning, it's been our intention to
offer radio programming and label promotion staffs
Broadcast Data Systems information in an easy -to
-use package and in as timely a manner as possible.
And since 1994, when our country publication became
the first Monitor to offer news and editorial
features, we've tried to offer the industry a forum
for the serious (although not
solemn) exchange of programming ideas - a
trade magazine without clichés (although we hope to
help take your business to the "next level" anyway)
or record hype. At a
time when most trades are as much in the record
-promotion business as the journalism
business, it means a lot to us when major
programmers tell us they consider ours the only one
without a hidden agenda." |
